A community meeting took place on June 16th to get feedback from parents and community agencies about the supports needed for youth and young adults with special needs living in South Georgian Bay. The meeting was organized by LARC (Leisure, Arts, Recreation and Culture for youth with special needs) and E3 Community Services.
The most common themes identified included: continued learning, employment, inclusive social and recreational opportunities and transportation barriers to participation. A list of 15 recommendations was compiled as a result of the meeting.
At this time, a short term task group is being formed to look at the issue of continued learning with a focus on post-secondary education. We welcome the engagement and collaboration of parents and community partners who have an interest in this issue and would like to sit on the task group.
The first meeting of the task group will take place on November 7, 2016 from 7 to 8 pm at the Collingwood YMCA/Children’s Treatment Network, 200 Hume Street, Activity Room. You will need to sign in at the front desk with photo ID if you are not a Y member. Parking is available at the front and back of the building and in the adjacent Curling rink parking lot.
