Who Are We?
At Tots ‘n’ Tykes Child Care Centre, we view all children as competent, capable, curious learners, rich in potential.
Our curriculum and pedagogy are consistent with the Ministry of Education document “How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years.” We feel that children deserve to have a pedagogical approach that has learning experiences grounded in practices that are in keeping with the new era of play and learning. We want the children and the families to have a sense of belonging and a sense of community.
We adopted the Reggio Emilia curriculum. The Reggio Emilia philosophy is an approach to teaching, learning and advocacy for children. In its most basic form, it is a way of observing what children know, are curious about, and what challenges them. This is a different approach to play. Educators are now viewed as the children’s play partners. The inquiry-based play is directed by the children’s interest, sense of wonder and curiosity. Educators engage with the children by providing more natural type materials and loose parts. The traditional commercial type toys are replaced with materials that inspire both the children and the educator. The Reggio approach allows educators to be reflective in their practice and design environments that are based on what they have observed from interacting with the children.
Outdated practices such as themes, product art, mandatory circles, lining up, and rigid daily schedules have been replaced with approaches that embrace the competence of children as they engage in purposeful play with divergent materials.
