Competent, Capable and Curious Learners
Tots ‘n’ Tykes Child Care Centre

How Does Learning Happen?
At Tots ‘n’ Tykes Child Care Centre, we view all children as competent, capable, curious learners, rich in potential.
Our curriculum and pedagogy are consistent with the Ministry of Education document “How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years.” We feel that children deserve to have a pedagogical approach that has learning experiences grounded in practices that are in keeping with the new era of play and learning. We want the children and the families to have a sense of belonging and a sense of community.

Reggio Emilia Curriculum
We adopted the Reggio Emilia curriculum. The Reggio Emilia philosophy is an approach to teaching, learning and advocacy for children. In its most basic form, it is a way of observing what children know, are curious about, and what challenges them. This is a different approach to play. Educators are now viewed as the children’s play partners. The inquiry-based play is directed by the children’s interest, sense of wonder and curiosity. Educators engage with the children by providing more natural type materials and loose parts.

Child-Led Learning for Life
A child-led approach emphasizes the importance of allowing children to take the lead in their learning and play activities. This method fosters independence, creativity, and confidence by giving children the freedom to explore their interests at their own pace. Educators and caregivers act as facilitators, providing a supportive environment and resources that encourage curiosity and discovery. Observing and responding to each child’s unique needs and preferences helps create a personalized learning experience that promotes emotional, social, and cognitive development. Ultimately, the child-led approach nurtures a love for learning and helps children develop essential life skills naturally and engagingly.

Service Details
Tots ‘n’ Tykes is more than just a daycare—it’s a learning hub where children explore the world through play, guided by the Reggio Emilia approach. This philosophy centers on child-directed learning, where children’s curiosity and sense of wonder drive the activities. Our educators act as partners in play, facilitating learning experiences using natural materials and loose parts to encourage creativity and exploration.
With a focus on building a sense of belonging, our program supports both indoor and outdoor play, quiet and active periods, and offers a balance of educator-supported and child-initiated activities. This holistic approach ensures that every child’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs are met in an enriching environment.
Our facility is licensed to accommodate up to 39 children, with room for toddlers and preschoolers. We provide flexible hours, operating year-round from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For families in need of financial assistance, we offer subsidized spaces through Simcoe County Children’s Services.
